I know a lot of rappers in the history of hip hop have retired only to resurface and continue their careers. Like Lupe, many of them begin retirement talks with an album ironically right around the corner for release. However, Lupe Fiasco is the only rapper I believe when he says he's retiring. His struggles within the industry are infamous (Atlantic Records you really do suck ass) and his love for politics and literature are genuine. His personality is eccentric enough to actually allow him to retire from rap AND STAY RETIRED. Still, his new album Food and Liquor 2 is weeks away from release so I still look at his retirement talk sideways. With Lupe, who knows???
As a fan, I remind Lupe of 4 points:
1) You can still make music for people to listen to and enjoy in retirement. You don't have to be paid to create beautiful art for the world to enjoy.
2) You still owe us LupEND....YOU PROMISED!!!!!
3) Your contractual obligations to Atlantic Records are almost completed. I don't know if you've heard but the indie label route is SWWWWWEEEEEEET. The money you make is yours. The art you create is yours. There is no pressure to make records you don't want to. Your boss is pretty much a die hard fan. #POW
4) Come On Son!!! Yesterday, Forbes just gave you a shout out on their Hip Hop Cash Kings list. You made $5 million son....let me be Lupe Fiasco then if you don't want to be.
In the midst of all this retirement talk, Lupe left us with an appetizer to hold us over until Food and Liquor 2 drops September 25.
